Season's Greetings from the ESPR

Dear ESPR members,
Dear friends,

As we approach the year's end, we extend our gratitude for the fantastic teamwork in developing and applying research. Our members' combined efforts define the ESPR, and jointly, we remain committed to improving the health of infants and children around the world.

In 2023, notable milestones marked our journey: a successful 5th edition of the Congress of joint European Neonatal Societies (jENS 2023), the launch of our inaugural courses at the European School of Neonatology (ESN), and the introduction of an ESPR mini-documentary of life and work in the context of the NICU, among other achievements.

May your holiday season be safe and joyful with cherished moments for you and your loved ones. We eagerly anticipate our continued collaboration in the upcoming year and express heartfelt thanks for your unwavering support.

Sincerely,

Willem, Ana, Olivier, Pascal, Elisabeth & Raphaela

My fragile baby - An ESPR mini-documentary of life and work in the context of the NICU

The ESPR recently partnered with the artist and three-time World Press photo winner Giulio di Sturco and his team to create a documentary that gives voice not only to clinicians and researchers but also to members of the ESPR, sharing their vision of how to develop and apply research to improve the lives of infants, children and their families.

The result is a short film which gives a real-life portrait of the progress of a 26-week preterm baby boy, Ezra, from the first moments of life, how his family received him and cared for him, from the NICU to their home.

ESPR Early Career Investigator Mentoring Programme: joint publications by Mentors & Mentees

There are wonderful news from Karel Allegaert and Elif Keles from the ESPR Early Career Investigator Mentoring Programme (ECIMP). They published three papers on creatinine in neonates undergoing whole body hypothermia:

  • Serum Creatinine Patterns in Neonates Treated with Therapeutic Hypothermia for Neonatal Encephalopathy (Link);
  • Rescaling Creatinine Centiles in Neonates Treated with Therapeutic Hypothermia for Neonatal Encephalopathy (Link);
  • A Population Model of Time-Dependent Changes in Serum Creatinine in (Near)term Neonates with Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy During and After Therapeutic Hypothermia (Link);

Watch this short video of Elif talking about their publications and her experiences as a mentee.

Moreover, we are excited to inform you that a paper of another mentor-mentee pair - Fuat Emre Canpolat and Tetyana Waldheim - has been accepted for publication! Once the paper is out we will share the link with you.

These are perfect examples of the great achievements which can be realised when mentors and mentees work together in the ECIMP. Our warmest congratulations to all involved!

Publication in Pediatric Research by ESPR members

Please find below a list of the latest papers by ESPR members published in our journal Pediatric Research:

  • Multisensory stimuli and pain perception in the newborn (Link);
  • Management of neonates with maternal prenatal coronavirus infection and influencing factors (Link);

We wholeheartedly congratulate all experts involved in the publication of these papers!

Survey about respiratory management in infants receiving therapeutic hypothermia for neonatal encephalopathy

Neonatal encephalopathy is a devastating condition that affects 1-3/ 1000 live births in developed countries and accounts for 0.3 million deaths worldwide. Respiratory management of those infants presents a particular challenge leading to various clinical practice.

With this survey, the Department of Neonatology, at Semmelweis University, wants to explore the different protocols across neonatal intensive care units. If hypothermia treatment for neonatal encephalopathy is provided in your unit, kindly participate in this survey.

Estimated time for completion: 10 minutes.

Survey on head circumference monitoring during childhood: a global comparison of guidelines

The Harry's Hydrocephalus Awareness Trust (Harry's HAT) would like to invite you to complete their survey on head circumference monitoring during childhood in order to gain a better understanding of current practice in terms of routine head circumference monitoring, and how policies vary across different countries.

Harry's Hydrocephalus Awareness Trust is a paediatric hydrocephalus charity based in the UK, researching differences in routine head circumference measurement policies.

Estimated time for completion: 5-7 minutes.

Survey: Neonatal pulmonology - what do trainees across Europe learn during subspecialty training?

The ESPR Early Career Investigators Section would like to gain an insight into what neonatal training in the field of pulmonology looks like across Europe. Trainee perspectives will play a pivotal role in shaping and developing future training curriculums – those which are both clinically and academically relevant for neonatal subspecialty trainees.

We would like to invite any current neonatal subspecialty trainee, or those who have recently finished neonatal subspecialty training (within the past 3 years), to complete this short survey via the link below...and the consultant neonatologists to kindly distribute the survey to their neonatal subspecialty trainees!

Estimated time for completion: 5-10 minutes.
